Mary Ann Woodruff’s Last of the Good Girls is the compelling memoir of a child of the 1940s who followed all the rules–until she couldn’t any more. Like many in her generation, she married Mr. Right, kept house, raised her children, joined a church, and volunteered in her community. Then, at midlife, she had to dismantle it all to find her true self. To her surprise, that included falling in love with another woman. It was a truth she had difficulty embracing. Woodruff had spent decades as a faithful church woman, serving as a Presbyterian elder and consulting with congregations and at every level in the denomination. When her church continued to insist on overtly restricting roles for gays and lesbians, she dared to speak out. To do so, she had to first face down the voices of homophobia clamoring in her own head–and all those forces that had compelled her to conform. A rigorous exploration of her emotional and spiritual interior led her to new understanding of her self. In lyrical, heartfelt prose, embellished with poetry, she tells how she was drawn to acknowledge a truth she didn’t welcome, how an unexpected love called her out of deep fear, and how her whole family reshaped itself into a new circle of support.

there seem to be a lot of books about young men discovering that they are gay. I wondered if there were any for women, and this was recommended to me. This is definitely not a young woman but it is an interesting story.

The Last of the Good Girls eBook Mary Ann Woodruff Reviews

A beautifully written account of the author's journey through adulthood. Mary Ann's memoir is purposeful and reflective providing an avenue for the reader to reflect on their own path and spirituality.
Insightful sympathetic life manual for divorce, the how and when, and perhaps the why in dealing with family and friends....i learned so much I wish I had known earlier a and could have used myself. Spiritual, philosophical, tender and loving. I will read it again. And again
Heart wrenching, joyous, conflicted, courageous; Mary Ann's coming out story is beautifully and intelligently written, and is a tribute to her supportive family and friends and her beloved spouse Mary. Her struggles with her religious grounding are particularly heartbreaking and intense. I loved the book for its honesty, its spareness, and its wisdom.
If you grew up in the fifties you won't want to miss this. You will be amazed at how much you have in common with the author.
If you didn't grow up at that time you will get insight into what made so many cookie cutter women who never were free to be uniquely themselves.
This book was well written but not particularly entertaining. You could definitely sympathize with the author's struggles to accept herself and her life but it just seemed to never have a pentacle point. I wasn't sorry that I read the book but I don't know that I'd opt to read it again.
This is a woman who knows how to be honest with herself and then with her reader. Fully aware of the privilege with which she was raised, Mary Ann learns, in mid-life, that she loves a woman. Not the kind of 'coming out' story I expected. Mary Ann was quite reluctant to accept this part of herself, not only because of society's homophobia, not only because of her church's prejudice, but also because of her own fears and misconceptions about what it is to love someone of the same sex. By the end of the book, Mary Ann is able to shed all that and see love for the beautifully simple gift that it is.
As someone who started life as a "good girl" and who had my world view turned on end when my marriage failed, I found it extremely helpful to get a look into Woodruff's mind and soul.It gives me hope to hear about people who are disillusioned with organized religion yet manage to maintain a deep spiritual connection to our world and the universe, and in this case, to God. The story of Woodruff's marriage, how it withered, and how she and her ex-husband are still close friends, is inspiring. Equally inspiring is the love story between Woodruff and the woman she fell in love with, Mary Dispenza. I have read other "coming out" stories, but this one is different than most due to the fact that Woodruff didn't come out--even to herself-- until she was in her middle years. A delightful feature of this book is the inclusion of Woodruff's poems that she has written over the years. They are substantive and beautifully-written.
